"10Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
11The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
12She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
13She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.
14She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.
15She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.
16She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.
17She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.
18She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.
19She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.
20She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.
21She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.
22She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.
23Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.
24She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.
25Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
26She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
27She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
28Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
29Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
30Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
31Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates."
Proverbs 31:30, "Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised."
I have heard that passage many times, and desire to make it a part of my life, but to be honest many times I felt I could not measure up to the Proverbs 31 woman because I don't have the ability, resources, time, etc. to do half of the stuff she does. So often in my mind I associated her being praised because of all the "stuff" she does to be a help meet and mother, but today I realized I got it wrong. She is not praised because of the outward deeds she does in this temporal life, but because of her spiritual roots being founded in Christ- her fear of Him, and desire to love Him and be joyful in Him which overflows to obedience in Him. Sure she is not afraid of the snow because she has taken the precautionary measures to cloth her family (Proverbs 31:21) but more importantly she is not afraid because she is grounded in a God who is for her.
This was pretty monumental for me the thought that when trouble arises or when winter comes I don't need to worry or fear because I have God on my side (not saying everything will pan out the way I think it ought to). Also the fact that she is praised for her fear of God and not merely the things she does or how she does it.
So I mentioned that I felt a little bit of a challenge and the challenge was to be so rooted in God like in
Psalm 1: 2-3, "
But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.",
that when trouble, adversity, change, or anything that would make me worry or fret arises I would be un-moveable in my steadfast love, trust, and confidence of God. That my children will remember who God is and what He has done in my life and that they could apply it to their own.
So today instead of thinking of all the ways you can go green, eat raw, exercise, live with less stuff, get back to the old ways of living, learning to sew and cook, or whatever it may be instead put forth your best in learning to fear God. Don't get me wrong I think being a wise help meet is very important and I don't think that I should be a sluggard with my time, but what matters most in life is God and I think that a lot of other things have become our idols- especially as woman.
